My 4th grade team lost 39-8 in our first game. The league allows a simple half court press, no full court pressure.

1. We could get the ball past a 1-3-1 and 2-3 half court press
2. We did a decent job defending their point guard, they score on the fast break... a lot!!

Any recommendations? Besides recruit a point guard.

I assume that was supposed to say we could "NOT" get the ball past a 1-3-1 and 2-3 half court press?

If that's the case I would not worry too much. I don't think 4th graders should be playing those types of defenses. Doesn't help anyone and is not developmentally appropriate.

I would just focus on skills and keep developing your players. If their defenses are good there just isn't much you can do at this age. You need big, strong, and skilled players to make the necessary passes to handle defenses like that. Players need to keep spacing, create passing angles, use pass fakes, and move the ball to deal with those defenses. Might be a lot to ask at this age and that takes time.

Maybe other teams you see will play man to man like they should be playing at this age?
