I coach a 6th grade rec league. We have some boys who are on travel teams and some boys who are shall I say learning the basics still. We get one hour practice a week and there are about 10 weeks left to the season. I have the motion offense from you guys and the shooting stuff too. The boys get equal playing time on game days. Which would benefit us more - the point system or the defense class or something else and why?

Hi Coach,

Good question! From a player development standpoint, I would recommend the Post Play Book by Don Kelbick (http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/pr/post-play.html) and then the Value Point System by Danny Miles (http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/pr/value-point-system.html).

With that said, 6th grade might be a little young for the Value Point System. The system is awesome but if the players are beginners it won't do them much good because they can't really play games effectively yet. It's just a turn over fest with no passing. If they have experience, can handle the ball, pass, and have the basic skills to play team basketball then I think the VPS will help considerably. You also need to commit to the VPS. You need to watch the DVD, you need to get the stats, report the stats, and use the VPS almost religiously. Just like anything, it's won't do you much good unless you embrace it.

I suggested the Post Play Book first because it's more than post play. It teaches you the most important all around skill - footwork. With out going into detail, the book opens your eyes on how to teach footwork and develop players. That's where I would start. Then I would implement the VPS.

From a pure winning standpoint right now (which I don't recommend being important), the M2M defensive system (http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/pr/mandefense.html) and the Value Point System (http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/pr/value-point-system.html) will do you the most good this year. They will help you win more games a little quicker.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you have further questions.

This is great advice from Jeff, coache... from a X Varsity coach's point of view.... I can tell you that we looked forward to having kids come in the school who knew how to play m2m defense... that means that they have a good understanding of the game.

The head coach before used to say that playing zones were like standing around and airing out armpits.... and those kids coming in that played all zone were tough to intregate into our system.. and I am sure that I am speaking for the majority of high school coaches.

I think the point system is great... but as Jeff said.. probably not appropriate for this age group since they all have to play,...... which is a good philosophy.

Great post Jeff!
