Coach P, a tough man-to-man pack-it-in defense can be tough to play against at this age, especially since players typically don't shoot the ball very well from long-distance.

There are plenty of great suggestions above that should help. Here is an additional suggestion that has helped me.

You may have already tried this, but you could try running your plays 5v0 (no defense) and pretend that the play doesn't work and transition into motion. Have them continuously run it without shooting - 10, 15, or 20 passes. This seems to work well with my teams. Then add a defense after they get the hang of it.

To get the players used to moving the ball continuously with a defense, I will also tell the kids "6 passes" or "10 passes" and that means they must pass the ball that many times before shooting an outside shot. We take lay ups via the pass or the dribble if there is a wide open lane.

If I feel they are dribbling too much, I will say "10 passes - no dribble" and that means they can't dribble or shoot an outside shot before the designated amount of passes. They can only dribble if there is a wide open lane.

Great ideas Jeff,

I used this with my Varsity boys team when we were running our Open Post offense... only I used ball reversals... the older kids would pass it back and forth to each other if I just used passes LOL Smart aren't they!

This worked very well for us - reversing the ball forces the D to move more and that we had better success in breaking them down. Their help side D got worse which allowed us to take it to the hole or have back door opportunities.
