]My son is a 7th grader. My question is-- would he be better off to play on a travel team, or go to a coach for one on one. He currently goes to a coach and has learned a lot from him. he plays and starts for his school team. I hear some people say he is better off to just go to a coach. then i hear others say he has to put the things he learns there into a game. what is your thoughts.
Thank you[/size]

That all depends... not all travel teams or individual trainers are equal. I know some very good travel teams that I would recommend over certain trainers. And conversely I know very good trainers that I would recommend over certain travel teams.

Ideally, you son gets skill work (with a trainer or coach) that does a really good job with him... getting in some consistent work each week. And that is complimented with a few games where he can practice translating those skills and the decision making into actual games. That is ideal. So something like 2-4 practices a week with 1-2 games a week against appropriate level of competition is a really good formula for development. During the training, some small sided games are very helpful... whether playing on a team or not... but even more so important if not playing on a team.

With that said, every player is different too. That work load might burn him out. You want it to be fun and maintain that passion and fire for the game. Too much can be too much.

Hope that helps.
