Post subject:  Question concerning discipline

Hi, I was reading your article regarding discipline and have a question regarding my twin boys who are currently on a 1st grade basketball team. Their coach keeps threatening to make all kids do push ups if they don't pay attention during practice. My view is that her threatening approach lacks follow through and she would be better off setting up expectations/rules with the kids. I would like to speak to her about how this makes me feel uncomfortable as a mom but My husband doesn't not want me to approach the coach. What would you suggest that I do?

I probably would not do anything and would not talk to the coach. First it is very tricky to approach the coach about something like this without creating friction and/or upsetting the coach. Second you don't want to get in the habit of bailing your kid out. Give them space... they will learn more from you allowing them to deal with good and bad situations without mom or dad stepping in.

Bottom line if your kids will have good and bad coaches over the years. They will probably learn just as much from their bad ones as the good ones.
