My daughter is soon to be 8 and tall for her age. Currently we have a basketball that is too big. I had no idea. The box said 8-12 year old girls....

Should I use the size 5 for dribbling and drills...then use the size 4 for shooting?

There is a lot of conflicting info out there and your site is the only site that suggests a size 4 ball.

Thank you for all your help

Every player is different from a development standpoint -- strength, size, experience, etc. But generally speaking I'd say yes... ideally use a size 5 for dribbling and size 4 for shooting.

The main thing is to make sure they are shooting with good technique and not having compensate by dropping shoulder, twisting body, using two hands, and chucking the ball up there because the ball is too heavy.

When first starting, using a really light ball is great so young kids can develop a smooth release without weight being a big factor. Once muscle memory is developing larger basketballs can be incorporated.
