Hi, I am looking for advice on what size bball to buy for my son. He will be 11 years old entering the 5th grade next fall (Sept) , however he is pretty big for his age. He is about 5'1 and weighs about 103 pounds. Based on the size charts for age and grade it says size 5 ball , but I'm thinking based on his actual height and weight, he should be using a larger ball.

What would you recommend for him?

Thanks,
Serge

28.5 inch, size 6 ball sounds about right. The problem with boys is most of them go to 3pt line and start shooting. From that distance his form will probably be messed up because of the distance. If he stays 15ft and in he probably can shoot fine with a 28.5 ball. Just keep an eye on form and move him in or use smaller ball as needed.
