Post subject:  the best summer camp for european players

My son is 14, we live in Spain, and he plays in UNICAJA, one of five best basketball teams in Spain. He speaks fluent english and is very disciplined ,easy going and used to hard and exhausting training sessions.

He is 197cm tall, but he probably won't grow much more. His motor skill limits, both gross and fine, are already becoming a problem, and I firmly believe that only a highly individual approach to his difficulties can help him overcome them and reach the maximum of his potential.

This is why he would like to spend up to three weeks in USA this summer , in hope he can improve a lot before next season.
I have browsed throguh different USA basketball summer camps sites, but it is so difficult to choose the right one . Could you please recommend me the one you feel might be most suitable for him?

I think the Attack & Counter, Decision Training, and Elite Guards camps offered by Breakthrough would be valuable for him. If I had to pick one I'd probably pick the Elite Guard camp but really you can't go wrong with any of them.

He just needs to keep in mind that what ever he puts into the camp is what he'll get out of it. There are camps for developing SKILLS and LEARNING. There are a wide variety of players abilities these are not camps where you "play games". It's all about individual development and learning from your instructors.

Hope this helps.

Thank you a great deal for your prompt reply.
The problem with the camps offered on your site is that they are all only two - three days long.
Ideally, we woud like him to stay in one single camp for at least two weeks.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

I had good experiences as a coach at the Wootten camps at Frostburg State University in Maryland. Good teaching, and basketball from morning to late evening. Used to be run by Morgan Wootten, now I think his son Joe runs most of it, but Morgan was always around.

They do everything from skill work, to drill work, to competitive team games. They focus a great deal on the fundamentals.

Thanks a million.
I have had a look at their site, and have sent them a query to see if we can work it out so that my son stays with them for two full weeks at least. ( since their officially offered camps are just 5 days long)

They have done that before, I believe. I was there 6 weeks, several kids were there for multiple camp sessions.

Though they may have been local, and gone home on the breaks.

Good luck. Hope he enjoys it.

thanks for all the info and advice.
One more question - I have also found plenty of info abot several NIKE international camps , usually combined with language classes, which, in my son's case aren't a must, but do mean an extra gain (at least from his parents' point of view, ha,ha).
Any experience with these? Are they as effective as Breakthrough camps?
THey even organise camps in the UK , which travel wise, would make it all much simpler for us.However, my concern is that they are not so much into the game, but more versatile, fun places for kids and youngsters who want to have a good time and also play basketball a bit....

thanks for your reply.
In case breakthrough decide to organise any longer camps for european players, I'll definitely opt for one of them
