It sounds like your kids are behind some of the other kids, largely because they started a little later. Good news is that they can catch up. I coach a competitive team (13 year olds) and had a boy tryout for our team a year ago who had barely played before. But he was/is very tall, had an excellent attitude and supportive parents. So I added him to the team knowing he was something of a project. He worked hard in practice, tried his best in games even though he was overwhelmed at times, listened to instruction, spent hours at home in the driveway hoop working on big man moves by himself, and is doing 3 weeks of summer camp, When we start back up in the fall, he will be a completely different (and better) player from where he was a year ago.

Your kids can get there too. But I would caution that a personal coach one hour a week, while it might help, is not going to be a pancea no matter how good he is. Like others have suggested your boys need more time with the ball in their hands, whether it is playing in other rec leagues, shooting with you at local playground, doing dribbling drills on the patio 10 minutes a day, playing pickup 1 v 1, 2 v 2, 3 v 3 with their buddies after school. Good instruction and coaching is certainly important but it cannot substitute for putting in the work and the hours, but also keeping it fun.

You have read a lot of GREAT suggestions from various coaches... all of this stuff can drive you and your kids nuts.

They are young and behind some players.. so what... right now it should be about them learning the fundamentals, playing the game and HAVING FUN!

The more they play the better they will get.... and IF you get them on some teams that have a coach that knows how to teach the game/fundamentals..... they will get better, be patient with them and yourself.

Do yourself a favor, watch those DVDs and learn how to do some of those things so you can help your sons when they are working out at home. Pick out some of the things the coaches have said to you, that you feel will help your kids.
