Guys I have a daughter that's a jr in high school that has done cheerleading leading since middle school and now a son in middle school so I have been able to watch several kids in the district play ball since middle school and now witnessing it again with kids my sons age . It seems like way way to many kids dominate in middle school because they are so much more physically advance and further along in the puberty stages and by the time they et into high school there skill sets does not match up with there size and then they either quit or never see the floor . What are doing ? Why do we put 5'9 7th graders with light mustaches and an arm put full of hair in the low post at all times and only skill they have is with in 6 FT of the basket and when they are 10th graders they or 5'10-5'11 tryin to play the post with no dribbling skills, can't create there own shot or minimal jump shooters ? From what I have seen those kids that are undersized or just average size with good skills that can compete and hold there own all be it at a size disadvantage seem to be the kids that do better in high school after it shakes out and they do there growing . Does this happen in other places around the country ? We have a cpl kids I feel for around my sons grades that I question whether there skills will translate into there high school size ( not many elite 5-10 PF or C lol ) I tell my son to keep working on all ur skills ball handling , passing , Ft , mid range , 3FG , defense etc etc because we don't know what size u will end up . I also tell him not to worry about the kid 9 inches taller than u with the mustache because from looks of his body an his parents and ur body and ur parents I don't think he will always be 9 inches taller than u lol . Guess my point is we seem to doing these kids a disservice by labeling them a BIG and not teaching them all skills no matter there size as youth players.would like some opinions on this and what others see

You hit the nail on the head. That happens everywhere on most teams. That's part of the reason we started this website.

That's why we promote 5-out motion for youth offense because it teaches everybody how to lay on the perimeter. If you want to have players in the post area, that's fine. Just make sure they are interchangeable and they're not just sitting down low all of the time.

Here are a couple of articles about it:

Yep, I see it all the time. In fact, my son is a great example of what you're talking about (minus the mustache). He's always been tall for his age and currently sits at 6'1. That isn't a giant by 8th grade standards, but he's my tallest player.

We've always run a 5 out motion type offense, so he (and the other bigger guys) have been forced to work on their dribbling and outside shots. We have a drill the kids enjoy that I found on the internet called the 55 second garden glove drill. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMaXO5WuxFA). My son currently holds the record on our team with the fastest time. He really takes pride in the fact that he's big, but can dribble with both hands and perform the pretzel walk quickly.

He's had to learn "big guy" type skills on both offense and defense. My hope is that if he continues to work on his "guard skills", he can bring a pretty good package to a high school team. We'll see.

EDIT: What's interesting on my team is I have at least 3 boys who are just this yr around 5'7 - 5'8" and will end up in the 6'3-6'4" range. They haven't had much exposure to the "big guy" stuff, so that will be interesting in the coming years.

There is an old saying...... "The Center of today might be the Point Guard of tomorrow." Thats why you teach ALL the funamentals to every kid. We never know when kids will grow.... I loved The young looking kids that came in with a lot of skills.... I knew they were going to grow and become good playes.

Another SARism..... " Its not the size of the Dog in the fight... its the size of the FIGHT in the Dog." I never looked at size... heck, it I did that at the school I coched at, I would never have a team.I wanted tough kids and kids that listened... ones that played like a TEAM.

Blake is 12 now? How tall is he? I do know one things, from the one video you posted... he has some skills along with a great work ethic.

Coach Sar.. Blake is 12 yrs old and 5 FT tall in 6th grade . Idk If he will be similar to me or not but I am right at 6'1 I myself took a growth spurt late. I have 2 high school daughters that are 5'7 and 5'8. If I had to predict Blake I would guess he will be around 6ft give or take a inch or two but who knows how it will play out . One interesting thing tho and i thought this was kinda neat is I have some old baseball pictures from when I played LL and my mom had bought the pictures that was like sports cards and has my position height and weight and age and all my kids on there bdays we have always measured them and marked there height on a closet door . At 10 I was 4'9 and Blake was 4'9 at 10 . At 12 yrs old I was 5' 1/2in 96 lbs and at 12 Blake is 5' and 93 lbs . Lol 1/2 inch and 3lbs between us thought that was neat lol

...... I also have a 5 yr old playing his first organized team ball this yr and I will probably coach him next yr and maybe beyond . My plan is to teach every kid fundamental ball skills and let every kid handle the ball and study up on some of these offenses and drills to use . I may not be able to make a difference in every kid but maybe I can with a few of his classmates

Blake is a pretty typical 12 year old... some are bigger and some are smaller... at 12, I was about 4'10. As long as he keeps working on his game, I think he will be fine. Pysicall coordination is important and some kids that grow quickly lose that.. not all but some.

He is probably destined to be a point guard... and what team doesn't need a great point guard. Thats where my best teams started...... point - post (ran out of them) wing players that could shoot and take the ball to the hole. We ended up playing an open post offense, so for the most part my teams flousihed under that....

A lot of people thought we were stalling, yet we scored in the mid 50s all the time and when we had to... hjgh 60s.... my goal defensively was to hold the team around 45 points so you know where my thoughts were about playing the game.
CONTROL THE TEMPO OF THE GAME. Make everyone play to our style... get good shots every time down the floor and play great D! By the way, we were not afraid to shoot the 3 ball.
