Learn Exactly How to Develop a TOUGH
Man-to-Man Basketball Defense and Shut Down Your Opponents with this Step-by-Step Guide and 67 Time-Tested Defensive Basketball Drills

Why is basketball defense so important?

For starters, it's something that you can actually control on the basketball court.

You can't always control how many three point shots fall in the basket, BUT you can control the intensity of your basketball defense.

When you think about it, almost every championship basketball team at the college and professional level had a great man to man defense...

Just look at the last 5 NBA champions and their Points Allowed per Game:

  • 2008 Boston Celtics - 2nd in Regular Season, 2nd in Playoffs
  • 2007 San Antonio Spurs - 1st in Regular Season, 6th in Playoffs
  • 2006 Miami Heat - 2nd in Playoffs
  • 2005 San Antonio Spurs - 1st in Regular Season 4th in Playoffs,
  • 2004 Detroit Pistons - 1st in Regular Season, 1st in Playoffs
Now look at their Opponents PPP (Points per Possession):

  • 2008 Boston Celtics - 2nd in Regular Season, 2nd in Playoffs
  • 2007 San Antonio Spurs - 1st in Regular Season, 4th in Playoffs
  • 2006 Miami Heat - 10th in regular season, 2nd in Playoffs
  • 2005 San Antonio Spurs - 3rd in Regular Season, 2nd in Playoffs
  • 2004 Detroit Pistons - 1st in Regular Season, 1st in Playoffs
And if you look at the offensive statistics for each of these championship teams, NONE of them were at the top. Surprisingly, they were usually in the middle of the pack.

This is why SO many successful coaches constantly talk about the importance of basketball defense.

Great defense gives your team consistency and can keep you in games, even when you're not shooting so well.

So it's safe to say that basketball defense is REALLY important.

That is why our first full blown product is about man-to-man defense...

It's a brand NEW system that shows you EXACTLY how to develop a great man-to-man defense.

It's all laid out for you step-by-step. We give you all the basketball defense drills, philosophy, and exact steps you need to take. We've made it as easy as possible for you, even if you've never coached before. Experienced coaches will learn new things and brand new coaches will get a proven process to develop a great defense.

Imagine this for a moment...

Your team is on defense and they are waiting for the offense to bring the ball up the court...

The offense tries to move the ball around and probe with the dribble drive but NOTHING is there!

ALL five of your players are moving so quickly that the offense can't find an opening.

Your defense in PERFECT position...

They anticipate. They help each other. They rotate.

They contain the dribble penetration.

The ball never even gets close to the basket. The only thing the other team can do is launch up a long three pointer and PRAY it goes in.

All your players are talking, hustling, and shutting down the opponent.

The hustle and teamwork becomes contagious...

Other teams HATE playing against you because they never get easy shots.

Other teams HATE playing against you because their shooting percentage is horrible.

Other teams HATE playing against you because they know it's always one shot and DONE.

Other teams HATE playing against you because you're always back in transition waiting for them.

Other teams HATE playing against you because they almost never win.

You now have a reputation in the league and everyone knows that baskets NEVER come easy against your team. You have an awesome team!

Is that a beautiful picture or what?

Simplicity and teamwork at its best!

That was our goal when we developed this basketball defensive system for you...

We wanted to develop a system that teaches you exactly how to shut down the other team and win more games. And have fun doing it!

Who Should Consider This New Basketball Defensive System?

Basketball coaches:

Things actually turned out this way by pure luck, but our step-by-step system is exactly the same whether you are a youth basketball coach with 6 year olds, or an advanced basketball coach with college players.

The system will work for ALL age levels.

The ONLY difference will be the rate at which you advance through each step.

You will start with Step #1 and advance through each step just like everyone else. However youth coaches will move through each step slower than more advanced coaches.

For example, an experienced high school team might get through the first 7 steps in a couple days. But a youth coach might take two years to get through all 7 steps.

When coaching experienced players, we always start at the beginning because it's a great review for your players and coaches. In the off-season, players forget stuff. That's just how it is. It's just human nature. They're inevitably going to forget stuff and they're going to develop bad habits over the off-season.

Players will also pick up new things every year that they may have missed the season before. Eventually, your players will become defensive experts themselves and they'll be able to teach these same things to anyone else. When you get to that point, that's when you know that you've done a good job.

Bottom line, we have tried to structure things in a logical step by step process that allows you to implement your defense, no matter what age level.

Basketball players:

This product was developed for coaches. Will this product still help a high school or college player? Yes.

But I would NOT spend your hard earned money unless you're a high school or college player, and you're willing to take the time to study the book and learn some of the concepts.

The more you understand defense, the more you can impress your coach with your performance on the court. But we want to warn you. It takes the right type of player with the right mentality to benefit from this product. You need to consider your coach. Perhaps they have a different defensive system and philosophy? You can't go out there and use the exact team concepts we teach...

As a player, you'll need to read between the lines to figure out what applies to you and what does not apply to you.

In all honesty, we're torn about what to recommend to players. We do think some high school and college players will benefit from this product tremendously. And other players are NOT ready for this. Ultimately, it's your call.

"What an awesome product. I just wish that this would have been out a year or so ago before I purchased all those videos and other products (actually a couple thousand dollars). You guys did a great job! Forget buying anything else on defense. This is the only product you need."

"If there are coaches (especially new coaches and coaches coaching youth teams) who need a guide that's easy to understand that can help their team greatly improve their man to man defense, this is all they'll need to be successful because it provides a philosophy, teaching ideas, and drills for practice."

Rating: 5 Stars *****

- Terry Peaks, Basketball Coach - Murfreesboro, Tennessee

"I have never really looked at defense in the same way since (reading BreakthroughBasketball.com). I have started to implement this with my boys and by the time they are U18's they will be known as the best defensive team in our state. And state champions! I have been implementing the defensive principles for three weeks and have already seen a reduction in the oppositions shot percentage, we are already No. 1 in the division 2 competition with 13yr olds in a U16 comp, But I am sure that next year the boys will be 1st division leaders and be on top of that comp too."

- Billy Brady, Basketball Coach - Queensland, Australia

"This is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! there is enough info to give a person many options and different levels to be creative and if somethjing doesnt work, look further and you can find solutions.

This program allows room for errors and room to find other options not to mention combining different skills to adjust to our needs

If you are open minded this product will save you time in your organization of your team. They do the thinking for you"

- Hipolito Hernandez, Middle School Basketball Coach - Albquerque, New Mexico

"I have just begun to impliment the system with a 6th grade boys AAU team. We have only had 2 practices using the material. We have a tournament this weekend and I'm excited to see how it goes. They have a lot to learn and habits to break. But we did have a preview of the possibilities. Tonight we scrimmaged against another team and shut them down in the first half. They only scored 6 points and we only had 1 foul. We got several turnovers due to the wolf pack style defense. I love what you have done. Very simple to follow and full of sound defensive principles. As a coach and former player, I wish I would have had this sooner.

Well worth the money. Again, very simple to follow and full of sound defensive principles. Even if you are a seasoned veteran, it's a good read."

Rating: 4 Stars ****

- Michael Locati, Youth & High School Coach - Walla Walla, Washington

Here's another comment we received from Michael, 6 weeks after his rating & message above:

"We played a tournament last weekend and won. The winning was great but the true success that weekend was getting the most out of our kids. They are understanding the principles of good defense. We played 4 games. We held all of the teams to the lowest point totals in the tournament, 15,18,21 and 26. In the championship game the other team only scored 21 points. The other team came away from the game very frustrated because they felt they couldn't hit a basket. In reality they were never given an opportunity to shoot good, high percentage shots. The focus on defense rather than offense has given our kids an opportunity to feel a part of the team and the game no matter how much they play. They all feel they are contributing."

"So far, the system is very good. Well organized and descriptive. Honestly, I have not been through the entire piece of work, but it has helped me tremondously. I am a new coach with 4th grade boys and all of your material has benefited us. "

Rating: 5 Stars *****

I am teaching 10 year olds and use this publication for that purpose. All other teaching/restrictions only allow zone defenses to be taught. I for one as an official with 18 years of experience have seen problems with varsity teams trying to make the transition to man to man and it sure gets ugly. I was able to take concepts and put them down on a blank court diagram that provide information that players can use for future reference. This publication is helping me build solid players at the age of 10 and I await in anticipation to evaluate them when they reach high school level.

This product has been very helpful. I wish I had found it earlier in our current season. This product gave me a template to follow to build a fundamentally sound team defense.

The concepts are easy to break down, and with repetition, allow you to present a pretty stout defense to play against.

Great job!

Just took on an assistant role with a Provincial team and required support for man-to-man concepts. The e-book was absolutely perfect for my needs. Laid out in excellent fashion building layer upon layer plus drills to complement the teaching.

Any coach, beginner or expert, would benefit from this product.

As the book says, you can't play zone unless you can play man...you will be able to play man when you are done with this masterpiece!

Highly recommend!

GREAT product. Everything is layed out step by step in a way that your players will be able to understand it. My team last year was the league's leading scorers but our defense was below average and we ended up a little above .500. I look forward to implementing this defense next season.

Speaking as an experienced coach, though not with this age group (girls youth league coach), it was good to get back to basics and reinforce my emphasis on defense with the girls. I found many of the drills especially helpful when trying to teach defensive basics like helping, blocking out, and rotation.

A very worthwhile purchase for me!

I have purchased three products from you guys. Motion offense, man defense, and Bob Bigelows youth dvd. I can't wait to use Bob's ideas next year. As for the other two, my team was the highest scoring offense and the #1 defense in our league. Also most of the teams we faced used zones and we still gave up the fewest points per game. The key to teaching man defense is the help, your book is great and explains each step I don't know how I would have been able to teach these kids without these products. Thanks

Book was terrific. It changed the whole mindset of our 6th grade travel team. We were scoring a lot of points every game, but were playing about .500 ball. After implementing the concepts from the book our record improved and most importantly our team bought into the concept of man defense.

This is exactly what I needed. I've played basketball for years, but teaching it is entirely different. Some things you just do without thinking and this product made it possible for me to explain what I'd been trying to explain. Whew!! I coach girls middle school ball and the drills and breakdowns in this booklet have enabled the girls to learn so much. They played awesome man-to-man help defense on a visiting team this past weekend - even my little 6th graders. Thank you for such a fine product that explains the fundamentals and the mindset required for tough man defense.

My co-coach and I were given the reins to a middle school girls basketbal team that had no direction and no leadership. The talet level of the team was all over the spectrum. one or two club players, several city league players and several new to the sport players. We wanted to give the team some direction and a system that they could identify with. We decided to use the man defense system and were instantly rewarded with a group of girls that came together as a team. This school team had never had a winning season I have been able to find.

With the help of the drills and sets in this product, our team enjoyed a very sucessful season placing fourth in the league and fourth in the playoffs! The team defense heald the championship team to their lowest point total of their year and they were complemented by the championship team's coach. I think that speaks volumes to not only the girl's accomplishments but the man defense system's effectiveness. I strongly urge any new (or seasoned) coach to give this product a try and see what your team can accomplish!

Great, easy to follow book that does a nice job of breaking down the fundamentals of man defense. As a Varsity coach, I took this book and picked at it to really help develop our defensive system that is now going to be our staple from 4th grade up. I used a lot from this book in helping to develop a rhyme and reason for everything we do. The only thing that disappointed me is that you didn't cover defending inbounds plays anywhere in the book. I think this is an extremely important part of defense and can often times be the difference between winning and losing. I've seen good teams get killed on OB plays because it really is something that needs to be taught. Just a suggestion for an improvement in the future.

This is easily the best resource on man defense available. The ebook allowed me to implement an effective defense in a short period of time, and we were able to take advantage of the teams in our league who played primarily zone defense. My junior varsity team had been forced to play zone ever since they were in 5th grade, so they lacked any of the man defensive principles. But the step-by-step guide was just as easy to learn as it was to coach. Thank you!

Great job on putting this product together. There are plenty of easy to understand explanations and pictures and the drills are very effective. This is the best book I've seen on how to break man to man D down into simple, easy to understand pieces. From footwork, to defending the perimeter, to defending post, to defending cuts, to helpside D, this book breaks it all down into easy to understand pieces.

Great Book!!!!!!

Just a Quick note to the Gang at break through Basketball, I am a very diffuclt person to impress. I have seen alot of things come and go. I was very hesitant to purchase some of the products offerd. But how wrong I was. After purchasing 2 books The Motion Offense and Man to Man D. I am very impressed with the content and the simplicity of the teaching of the system after all thats what it boils down to for me. Making it easy to understand so that I can make it easy for my players to understand. If they understand what we want to accomplish then they are more likly to accomplish these things
Thank You
Ed

Great product guys! I have been coaching Jr. Highschool basketball for 15 years and, of course, have been teaching the basics of man defense. This list of drills is very usefull in that they are designed to teach, and to be competative at the same time. At my level more than others drills have to be clearly designed and presented, and the philosophy of Breakthrough Basketball always seems designed just for the needs of my teams.
I have been using products from this site for several years, and this is among the best.... and at the best price!
Thanks Guys...I give you a lot of the credit for my 25 -0 team last year, and with this new product I hope to come near that record again.

Excellent product! We have developed one of the most tenacious defenses in our conference. More importantly our players are understanding that defense is the key to championship basketball. Physical and mentally, this product helps to get back to teaching the game.

Very Good!!!

The one thing I could think of that may increase your effectiveness would be to break information down to 3 levels. Beginning, intermediate and advanced.

I was a fire service instructor for 25 years and the one thing that restricts your ability to reach a group with mixed levels of knowledge and experience is to teach to level above or below the students you are trying to instruct.

This ebook provides a great foundation for man-to-man defense. It is a good refresher to remind coaches of some of the basics we may have forgot, or forgot to teach, even though we known them in the past and assumed our players knew them also. Additionally, I'm always looking for different drills to teach the same principles/techniques just to keep practice from becoming routine. This product provides these drills.

Coaching under 12 age girls it has been difficult to persuade them the fundamentals of defense. This booklet has assisted me greatly and although we still have a long way to go the girls are picking up a lot of the ideas and realising that defense is probably the most important part of their game. Last weekend my girls won a grand final game coming from 8 points down at 1 stage. We put into practise what this book has been teaching and managed to shut the other team down and claw back to a 2 point win. So it must work. Thanks guys.

This is an excellent resource. Defense principles are laid out in an easy-to-read, teachable format. Illustrations and diagrams reinforce the concepts, and the drills show step-by-step, sequential process for teaching defense. This, like all their products, is a top-of-the-line coaching resource.

The man-to-man drills that Joe and Jeff present are fundamentally sound and easily adaptible to your talent level. This system will enhance what you are already doing regardless of your defensive philosophy. Well done!

Incredibly perfect for the team I am coaching. I have broken this system down and analyzed all of the skills needed to execute and this will be an awesome, intense strategy for my boys. Was impressed to see the Womens' U.S. Olympic team employing in China. Can't wait for practice to start!

Also, I would like to see you guys put out a download dealing with motion and continuity offenses on a more Intermediate level. I have the first free offense thing you sent and that's great as well

In this product, there are a lot of ideas that have been around for a long time and probably a timely reminder to go back to them. There are a lot of different concepts and training drills that I will be working through with my players. I would recommend this product to other coaches and I would simply tell them to start at the beginning and follow through on all stages.

The system is ok for players between 10-15 years. Since I practice with novices, I can only use a small part of the drills. I would recommend your product to other coaches, but would tell them, that it's especially useful for the fundamentals of defense. My suggestion to improve the product is to have more drills near to game situations

This is a fantastic read. The 6 or so questions I was going to ask were all answered and more. I guess its hard to improve on near perfection. This product helps teach players to move when the ball leaves the fingertips creating greater pressure simple but effective.

I have just begun to impliment the system with a 6th grade boys AAU team.

Even if you are a seasoned veteran, it's a good read.

I went through the e-books and really enjoyed the interview with Don Kelbick. It was truly insightful. I am currently coaching boys of age 12 and13 in house league and the skill levels vary significantly on the team. Introducing the concepts in the books has really been easy for all levels to understand and apply. The proof was when we beat the first-place, undefeated team, in out last game by shutting them down in the final minutes.

Thank you again for the early Christmas. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

This is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! there is enough info to give a person many options and different levels to be creative and if somethjing doesnt work, look further and you can find solutions.

This program allows room for errors and room to find other options not to mention combining different skills to adjust to our needs

If you are open minded this product will save you time in your organization of your team. They do the thinking for you

I have never really looked at defense in the same way since (reading BreakthroughBasketball.com).

If there are coaches (especially new coaches and coaches coaching youth teams) who need a guide that's easy to understand that can help their team greatly improve their man to man defense, this is all they'll need to be successful because it provides a philosophy, teaching ideas, and drills for practice.
