Purpose of the Drill:

The purpose of this series of drills is to work on footwork and quick feet in tight areas as well as cutting and shooting or finishing off the catch.

Instructions

In this portion of the drill, the player will start off by passing the ball to the coach.

They then run through the ladder then run a curl cut while receiving a pass back for a layup.

The player should vary their finishes by using different finishing moves on both sides of the rim.

  • In this portion of the drill, the player will pass the ball to the coach, run through the ladder, then curl cut for a jumper.
  • In this portion of the drill the player will be making the same curl cut after running through the ladder then take a hard dribble right for a pull up jumper or finish at the rim.
  • This is done to avoid a defender who is trailing the cut and the help defender who is showing on the cut.
  • Here the player is running the same curl cut and dribbling to the right, but this time they are adding a change of direction dribble and finishing at the opposite side of the rim.
  • Here the player is running the curl cut after the ladder and then ripping back through for a pullup jumper or finishing at the rim.
  • Here the player is making the same rip through move as in the previous step but this time adding a change of direction dribble and finishing at the opposite side of the rim.
  • In this step, the player is making a fade cut after running through the ladder for a jump shot.

Points of Emphasis:

Vary your movements through the ladder. Incorporate as many horizontal and vertical movements as you can.

    Move quickly through the ladder.

Stay low and have your hands ready to shoot.

Push the ball out on all attacking dribbles in order to clear the defender.

Incorporate all change of direction moves in steps 4 and 6.

Plant hard on the fade cut in step 7 and keep your shoulders forward when preparing to shoot.

Run this drill from both sides of the court.
