I’m not real big into talking about myself but apparently some people like to know this stuff and I want to be completely transparent with everyone…
I guess if I was reading this blog, I’d want to know WHO was writing this stuff and if they were a complete lunatic or what.
So here you go — a little bit about me (Jeff Haefner)…
I’m a basketball coach, skill development trainer, and Co-Owner of Breakthrough Basketball.
I currently live in Marion, Iowa with my wife, two kids, and our golden retriever (Izzy).
Right now I am coaching two teams — I will be coaching the sophomore boys’ team at Marion High School and also my daughter’s 3rd grade girls team.
This will be my first year at Marion High School. Last year I coached freshman and sophomores at Anamosa High School. Yes, I coached two games each night and had double duty! Truth be told, it was exhausting to coach two teams.
Our freshman went undefeated at 19-0 and our sophomores went 15-6. The impressive part is that every school we played (except one) was bigger than us (significantly higher enrollment).
Yes, I’m bragging a little bit. But who knows if I’ll ever get to coach an undefeated team again? So I have to brag while I can!
I have to say I was really lucky to have some great players. The truth is that my coaching had little to do with our success.
I enjoyed my time in Anamosa — the parents, staff, and players were incredible. I loved it. But I just couldn’t pass up a coaching opportunity in Marion, which is only a few minutes from my house.
Why do I coach youth and 10th grade basketball?
This is a question I get on occasion. The answer is simple…
I enjoy coaching those levels!
The commitment level is manageable so have time for myself and my family. It’s a lot of fun coaching young kids. And the sophomores are old enough where they can play at a pretty high level and do some of the advanced fundamentals that I enjoy teaching. And they are still at a somewhat impressionable age where I can hopefully have a positive impact on their lives.
Coaching my children at the youth level and a local sophomore boys’ team is PERFECT for me.
How I Make a Living
I earn a living and my paycheck as a co-owner and manager of Breakthrough Basketball. We do a bunch of camps, create DVDs, write eBooks, and stuff.
I’m pretty fortunate to have a job that I really enjoy. How could you not enjoy being around basketball each and every day??
Some of my other stuff…
This blog isn’t about promoting my products, it’s about sharing and helping other coaches.
But since some people do ask me and seem to be interested, I decided it would be helpful to provide everyone a list of DVDs and eBooks I have developed (just in case anyone is interested).
I do occasionally run some camps but I have recently scaled down so I can spend more time with my family. Soccer, baseball, gymnastics, dance, and all the kids’ activities keep me pretty busy! I wouldn’t miss that stuff for anything so the camps have slowed down for me.
